I love this time of year.  As we bring one year to a close and begin a new, people all around are sharing goals, visions, and plans for the future.  At the same time, we reflect on the mistakes, accomplishments, and events of the past.  It is a magical time filled with possibility to make the New Year AMAZING.

A New Year brings hope, excitement and a renewed energy.  Maybe this New Year is going to be one that fulfills all your dreams.  Maybe you will finally accomplish a goal you’ve been working toward, or make a big move you’ve been dreaming of.  Maybe you will travel more, spend more time with family, or outdoors, or join a cooking class!  Whatever your plans for 2018, I hope you start it with a joyful heart and a vibrant soul.

I am not a believer in “resolutions.”  Making vague promises to “eat healthy” and “workout more” are often forgotten by the second week of January.  At least in my experience.

I DO believe in setting goals.  And having a vision for the future.  Putting one foot in front of the other daily and doing something (even if it is something small) toward reaching your ultimate goal.

*By the way – there IS a distinct difference between a goal and a resolution.  A goal is a desired result that a person wants to achieve.  A target that a person wants to reach.  A resolution is a decision that was made to keep… A permanent change to your life.

I like to start the New Year with a list of goals I hope (WILL) accomplish.  Let me tell you, if you don’t do this, you should.  It is extremely satisfying to check things off that goal list.  You know the satisfaction of checking things off your to-do list?  Well, this is like that times ten.  Try it!

Here is my list of 2018 GOALS:

-Run a marathon.

This has been a goal I have wanted to put on my list for many years.  It just hasn’t quite made it there.  But this is the year.  In December I signed up to run Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN.  We will travel there in June and I will finally check this goal off my list.  Training starts the next month! I could not be more excited.

-Learn to use my camera.  And use it well.

I have always loved photography.  And I’ve always wanted to learn to photograph well.  There’s just something about being able to capture a moment in time.  And keep it forever.  A few years ago I received a Canon PowerShot Sx20 for Christmas.  It’s not the newest or most fancy camera, but this year I would like to learn to use it correctly (as in utilizing the settings and zoom lens and refraining from shooting everything on auto ;).  I would also like to learn how to use an editing software such as Lightroom or Photoshop.

-Blog more.

I started this blog for two reasons – To document our day-to-day and give Piper and myself something to look back on.  And because I enjoy writing.  And taking pictures.  What I didn’t realize is that it would also allow me to connect with people from across the globe.  I recently checked the stats of my blog and to my astonishment, I have had visits from the Ukraine, India, Australia, many parts of Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, and more.  I also had people email me to say they found my blog and enjoyed reading.  To know that my tiny free domain here is being read by people from all regions of the world is very cool to me.  This year I would love to expand my blog and virtually “meet” even more of you out there.

-Scroll less, play more.

This is a big one.  I guess this one is more of a resolution than a goal.  But it’s one of the most important to me.  I often catch myself turning to my phone and social media for entertainment.  But really, it’s not entertainment.  It’s a distraction.  This year I would like to remain more present for my daughter.  To spend more time playing, exploring, reading, crafting, and enjoying the awesomeness that is my three (almost four!) year old.  Because she is way cooler then anything on Instagram.

So there you have it.  My 2018 goals.

Have you created goals or resolutions for the New Year?  Share them with me in the comments!

The New Year is the perfect time to unfold new horizons and realize all dreams. Rediscover the strength and courage that lies within you and continue to move forward.
